Microorganisms are constantly present on, inside and around us; also at strange places where humans cannot live. The diversity in biosynthesis, degradation and adaptability of bacteria and fungi is hard to beat.
Among the tenths of millions existing species of microorganisms, humans have yet explored only a tiny fraction. Those few species are often used for production and processing also where others less studied might be better. The potential for different and more is gigantic and a main target for the ABS company.
Microorganisms are normally not visible but without their activity the world would stop. By culturing billions of the same type, a controlled force can be created, in a way that makes the cells do the same thing at the same time. This we wish to explore in collaborations with other companies and research groups to create value in a creative and sustainable way
Our thinking is that nature knows best, and it is therefore wise to first find suitable species and strains by isolating from natural habitats (life milieus), where searched properties have been a selecting advantage.
During more than 30 years we have therefore isolated, collected, studied and developed microorganisms from a range of habitats, with emphasis on naturally fermented foods, intestinal biota, waters and plants.
Our academic research has, in addition to publications, resulted in many applied ideas and strains of yeasts and lactic acid bacteria which we now wish to explore to create value in a concrete way also outside academia and publications.
